EVENING PRAYER
Vespers
(Lutheran Book of Worship, page 142)
Commemoration of Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, Teacher
L Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
L Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening,
C
L Let your light scatter the darkness,
C
Joyous light of glory:
of the immortal Father;
heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ.
We have come to the setting of the sun,
and we look to the evening light.
We sing to God, the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit:
You are worthy of being praised
with pure voices forever.
O Son of God, O Giver of life:
The universe proclaims your glory.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the universe, who led your people Israel by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night: Enlighten our darkness by the light of your Christ; may his Word be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for you are merciful, and you love your whole creation, and we, your creatures, glorify you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Amen
Let my prayer rise before you as incense;
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
O Lord, I call to you; come to me quickly;
hear my voice when I cry to you.
Let my prayer rise before you as incense;
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Set a watch before my mouth, O Lord,
and guard the door of my lips.
Let not my heart incline to any evil thing;
let me not be occupied in wickedness with evildoers.
But my eyes are turned to you, Lord God;
in you I take refuge. Strip me not of my life.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Let my prayer rise before you as incense;
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Silence for meditation.
Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O Lord, and let your lovingkindness descend upon us, that with purified minds we may sing your praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever.
Amen
Psalm 139:1-9
Antiphon:
The glory of the Lord shines on the city. Alleluia.
Its lamb is the Lamb. Alleluia.
1 Lord, you have searched me | out and
known me;*
you know my sitting down and my rising up;
you discern my thoughts | from afar.
2 You trace
my journeys and my | resting-places*
and are acquainted with | all my ways.
3 Indeed,
there is not a word | on my lips,*
but you, O Lord,
know it | altogether.
4 You press
upon me behind | and before*
and lay your | hand upon me.
5 Such
knowledge is too wonder- | ful for me;*
it is so high that I cannot at- | tain to it.
6 Where can I
go then | from your Spirit?*
Where can I flee | from your presence?
7 If I climb
up to heaven, | you are there;*
if I make the grave my bed, you | are there also.
8 If I take
the wings | of the morning*
and dwell in the uttermost parts | of the sea,
9 even there
your | hand will lead me*
and your right hand | hold me fast.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen
Antiphon:
The glory of the Lord shines on the city. Alleluia.
Its lamb is the Lamb. Alleluia.
Hymn O Love, How Deep LBW 88
stanzas 1-2, 5-7
1 Oh, love, how deep, how broad, how high,
beyond all thought and fantasy,
that God, the Son of God, should take
our mortal form for mortal’s sake!
2 He sent no angel to our race,
of higher or of lower place,
but wore the robe of human frame,
and to this world himself he came.
5 For us by wickedness betrayed,
for us, in crown of thorns arrayed,
he bore the shameful cross and death;
for us he gave his dying breath.
6 For us he rose from death again;
for us he went on high to reign;
for us he sent his Spirit here
to guide, to strengthen, and to cheer.
7 All glory to our Lord and God
for love so deep, so high, so broad;
the Trinity whom we adore
forever and forevermore.
READINGS
Romans 5:1-11
Following the reading:
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
From Proslogion by Anselm
Response
In many and various ways
God spoke to this people of old by the prophets.
But now in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.
The GOSPEL CANTICLE is sung.
Antiphon:
This is the day the LORD has made. Alleluia.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Alleluia.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed.
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm;
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen
Antiphon:
This is the day the LORD has made. Alleluia.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Alleluia.
LITANY OF THE RESURRECTION Lindeman, Daily Prayer
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
O Christ, hear us. O Christ, graciously hear us.
Jesus, our Paschal Lamb, who was offered
for us and has taken away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
Jesus, who by your death has destroyed
death and by your rising to life again has restored to us everlasting life; have
mercy on us.
Jesus, you rose early on the first day of
the week;
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you appeared first to Mary
Magdalene;
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you were seen by the women and were
worshiped by them;
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you appeared to the eleven, saying, ‘Peace
be with you;’
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you breathed upon your apostles that
they might receive the Holy Spirit;
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you confirmed the faith of Thomas by
bidding him touch your hands and your side;
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you showed yourself again to your
disciples at the Sea of Tiberias;
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you spoke to your apostles of the
things pertaining to the kingdom of God;
have mercy on us.
Jesus, you commissioned your apostles to preach
the Gospel to all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the
Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that you had
commanded them;
have mercy on us.
By your glorious resurrection; Good
Lord, deliver us.
By your victory over death; Good Lord, deliver us.
By the glorious majesty of your risen body;
Good Lord, deliver us.
Though unworthy, we implore you to hear us, Lord our God.
That we may walk in love, as you did walk
in love;
Grant us, good Lord.
That we may set our affections on things
above, not on things on earth;
Grant us, good Lord.
That we may dwell with you forever in the
new heaven and earth, in the Holy City, the New Jerusalem:
Grant us, good Lord.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the
world;
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the
world;
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the
world;
give us peace. Amen
O Christ, hear us. O Christ, graciously hear us.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
