EVENING
PRAYER
for Wednesday
in 6 Easter (Rogate)
Vespers
(Lutheran
Book of Worship, page 142)
Jesus
Christ is risen from the dead.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
We are
illumined by the brightness of his rising.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Death
has no more dominion over us.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Joyous
light of glory:
of the immortal
Father;
heavenly,
holy, blessed Jesus Christ.
We
have come to the setting of the sun,
and
we look to the evening light.
We
sing to God, the Father, Son,
and
Holy Spirit:
You
are worthy of being praised
with
pure voices forever.
O
Son of God, O Giver of life:
The
universe proclaims your glory.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and
praise.
We
praise and thank you, O God, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, through
whom you have enlightened us by revealing the light that never fades.
Night
is falling and day’s allotted span draws to a close.
The
daylight which you created for our pleasure has fully satisfied us, and yet, of
your own free gift, now the evening lights do not fail us.
We
praise you and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; through him
be glory, honor, and power to you in the Holy Spirit, now and always and
forever and ever.
Amen
Let my prayer rise before you as
incense;
the
lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
O Lord, I call to you; come to me
quickly;
hear
my voice when I cry to you.
Let my prayer rise before you as
incense;
the
lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Set a watch before my mouth, O Lord,
and
guard the door of my lips.
Let not my heart incline to any evil
thing;
let
me not be occupied in wickedness with evildoers.
But my eyes are turned to you, Lord
God;
in
you I take refuge. Strip me not of my life.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Let my prayer rise before you as
incense;
the
lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Silence for meditation.
Let the
incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O Lord, and let your
lovingkindness descend upon us, that with purified minds we may sing your
praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify
you forever and ever.
Amen
Psalm 124
God
feeds us with finest wheat. Alleluia.
He fills us with honey from the rock.
Alleluia.
1 If the Lord had not been | on our side,*
let Isra- | el now say;
2 if the Lord had not been | on our side,*
when enemies rose | up against
us,
3 then would they
have swallowed us | up alive*
in their fierce | anger toward
us;
4 then would the
waters have | overwhelmed us*
and the torrent gone | over us;
5 then would the |
raging waters*
have gone right | over us.
6 Blessed | be the Lord!*
He has not given us over to be a prey | for their teeth.
7 We have escaped
like a bird from the snare | of the fowler;*
the snare is broken, and we |
have escaped.
8 Our help is in the
name | of the Lord,*
the maker of heav- | en and
earth.
God
feeds us with finest wheat. Alleluia.
He fills us with honey from the rock.
Alleluia.
Lord
Jesus, you foretold that your disciples would be despised on account of your name,
yet you number the very hairs of their heads. In times of persecution, defend
and revive us by the power and comfort of the Holy Spirit, so that we can be
freed from our enemies and praise your saving help now and forever.
Amen
Hymn Onward, Christian Soldiers LBW 509
1 Onward,
Christian soldiers,
marching
as to war,
with
the cross of Jesus
going
on before.
Christ,
the royal master,
leads
against the foe;
forward
into battle,
see,
his banners go!
Refrain
Onward,
Christian soldiers,
marching
as to war,
with
the cross of Jesus
going
on before.
2 Like
a mighty army
moves
the church of God;
let
us boldly follow
where
the saints have trod.
We
are not divided;
all
one body we;
one
in hope and doctrine,
one
in charity. Refrain
3 Crowns
and thrones may perish,
kingdoms
rise and wane,
but
the church of Jesus
constant
will remain;
gates
of hell can never
’gainst
the church prevail.
We
have Christ’s own promise,
and
that cannot fail. Refrain
4 Onward,
then, you faithful,
join
our happy throng;
blend
with ours your voices
in
the triumph song.
Glory,
laud, and honor
unto
Christ the king.
We
through countless ages
with
the angels sing: Refrain

READING Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, be
strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole
armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the
devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh
and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able
to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth,
and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given
by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take
up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming
darts of the evil one; and take the
helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of
God, praying at all times in the
Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert
with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my
mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare
it boldly, as I ought to speak.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Silence for reflection.
Response
In many
and various ways
God
spoke to his people of old by the prophets.
But now in these last days he has spoken to
us by his Son.
The GOSPEL CANTICLE is sung.
Antiphon:
This is
the day the Lord has made. Alleluia.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Alleluia.
My
soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my
Savior,
for he has looked with favor on
his lowly servant.
From this day all generations
will call me blessed.
The Almighty has
done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
He has mercy on
those who fear him
in every
generation.
He has shown the strength of his
arm;
he has scattered the proud in
their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from
their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with
good things,
and the rich he has sent away
empty.
He has come to the help of his
servant Israel,
for he has remembered his
promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our
fathers,
to Abraham and his children
forever.
Glory to the Father, and to the
Son,
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be
forever. Amen
Antiphon:
This is
the day the Lord has made. Alleluia.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Alleluia.
Litany of Thanksgiving (Herbert Lindemann, The Daily Office, alt.)
Lord,
have mercy. Lord,
have mercy.
Christ,
have mercy. Christ,
have mercy.
Lord,
have mercy. Lord,
have mercy.
O
Christ, hear us. In
mercy hear us.
O
God, you have employed your power, wisdom and love for us:
Have mercy
on us.
Every
moment you bestow new blessing upon us.
Have
mercy on us.
You have not withdrawn your bounty, though we have sinned against you;
Have mercy on us.
We
thank you, O Lord, for you have made us in your image;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have raised us to an aim and end beyond this life;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have given us life and immortality;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have made us to know you, love you, and serve you;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have made us together with all creatures;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have kept and nourished us, in your fatherly goodness;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have redeemed us from sin, death, and evil by the Passion of your dear Son;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have made us members of your holy Church;
We thank you, Lord.
You
have given us the Holy Sacraments;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have not rejected or condemned us for so many past sins;
We
thank you, Lord.
You
have saved us from innumerable sins of soul and body;
We
thank you, Lord.
For
your fatherly correction and warning;
We
thank you, Lord.
For
your gifts and blessings which we have not yet fully known;
We thank you, Lord.
For your gifts and blessings which we have so often sinfully misused;
We
thank you, Lord.
For your gifts and blessings which you have bestowed on our relatives, benefactors, and friends;
We thank
you, Lord.
For
your gifts and blessings you have bestowed on all humankind;
We
thank you, Lord.
In union with the thanksgivings of the Church on earth and in heaven;
We
thank you, Lord.
Lamb
of God, you take away the sin of the world:
Have mercy on us.
Lamb
of God, you take away the sin of the world:
Have mercy on us.
Lamb
of God, you take away the sin of the world:
Grant us peace.
O
Christ, hear us. In
mercy hear us.
Lord,
have mercy. Lord,
have mercy.
Christ,
have mercy. Christ,
have mercy.
Lord,
have mercy. Lord,
have mercy.
Let us
pray for our own needs and the needs of others.
Silent prayer.
Into
your hands, Father, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy,
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy
name,
thy kingdom
come,
thy will be
done,
on
earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily
bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive
those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us
from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory,
forever and
ever. Amen
Let us
bless the Lord. Thanks
be to God.
Hymn All Praise to Thee, My God, This
Night LBW 278
1 All
praise to thee, my God, this night
for
all the blessings of the light.
Keep
me, oh, keep me, King of kings,
beneath
thine own almighty wings.
2 Forgive
me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
the
ill that I this day have done;
that
with the world, myself, and thee,
I,
ere I sleep, at peace may be.
3 Teach
me to live, that I may dread
the
grave as little as my bed.
Teach
me to die, that so I may
rise
glorious at the awesome day.
4 Oh,
may my soul in thee repose,
and
may sweet sleep mine eyelids close,
sleep
that shall me more vig’rous make
to
serve my God when I awake!
5 Praise
God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise
him, all creatures here below;
praise
him above, ye heav’nly host;
praise
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Text: Thomas Ken, 1637-1711
Prayer
and Benediction
Accept,
O Lord, our praises and supplications, and look graciously on our households
and our faith family, that we may abide this night in peace and safety under
the shadow of your wings, and so assist us by your grace that we may be made
fit for that kingdom where there shall be no more sin, nor sorrow, nor pain,
but all shall be joy and peace in the Holy Spirit, to whom, with you, O Father,
and you, O blessed Jesus, be all glory, both now and evermore.
Amen
The
almighty and merciful Lord,
the
Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve us.
Amen
