EVENING PRAYER

for Holy Wednesday

Vespers

(Lutheran Book of Worship, page 142)

The Service of Light is omitted during Holy Week.

O God, come to my assistance.

  O Lord, make haste to help me.

The Gloria Patri is omitted during Holy Week.

Let my prayer rise before you as incense;

                the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

O Lord, I call to you; come to me quickly;

                hear my voice when I cry to you.

 Let my prayer rise before you as incense;

                the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Set a watch before my mouth, O Lord,

                and guard the door of my lips.

Let not my heart incline to any evil thing;

                let me not be occupied in wickedness with evildoers.

But my eyes are turned to you, Lord God;

                in you I take refuge. Strip me not of my life.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Let my prayer rise before you as incense;

                the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Silence for meditation.

Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O Lord, and let your lovingkindness descend upon us, that with purified minds we may sing your praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever.

Amen

Psalm 70

Antiphon:

Christ has humbled himself and become obedient to the point of death,

  even death on a cross.

1 Be pleased, O God, to de- | liver me;*

                O Lord, make | haste to help me.

2 Let those who seek my life

be ashamed and altogeth- | er dismayed;*

                let those who take pleasure in my misfortune

draw back and  be disgraced.

3 Let those who say to me "Aha!" and gloat over | me turn back,*

                because they | are ashamed.

4 Let all who seek you rejoice and be | glad in you;*

                let those who love your salvation say forever,

"Great | is the Lord!"

5 But as for me, I am | poor and needy;*

                come to me speedi- | ly, O God.

6 You are my helper and | my deliverer;*

                O Lord, | do not tarry.

Antiphon:

Christ has humbled himself and become obedient to the point of death,

  even death on a cross.

The psalm prayers are omitted in Holy Week.

Hymn                   Lord, Keep Us Steadfast In Your Word                     LBW 230

1      Lord, keep us steadfast in your word;

        curb those who by deceit or sword

        would wrest the kingdom from your Son

        and bring to naught all he has done.

2      Lord Jesus Christ, your pow'r make known,

        for you are Lord of lords alone;

        defend your holy church, that we

        may sing your praise eternally.

3      O Comforter of priceless worth,

        send peace and unity on earth;

        support us in our final strife

        and lead us out of death to life.

READING                                                          John 13:21-32

After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus' side, so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.

The Word of the Lord.                                        Thanks be to God.

Response

In many and various ways

God spoke to his people of old by the prophets.

  But now in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.

The GOSPEL CANTICLE is sung.

Antiphon:

Glory to the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  our salvation, life, and resurrection.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;

                my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

                for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

                From this day all generations will call me blessed.

                                The Almighty has done great things for me,

                                and holy is his name.

                                He has mercy on those who fear him

                                in every generation.

                He has shown the strength of his arm;

                he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

                He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

                and has lifted up the lowly.

                He has filled the hungry with good things,

                and the rich he has sent away empty.

                He has come to the help of his servant Israel,

                for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

                the promise he made to our fathers,

                to Abraham and his children forever.

                Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Antiphon:

Glory to the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  our salvation, life, and resurrection.

Herbert Lindemann, The Daily Office, alt.

Gracious Jesus, our Lord and our God, who at the sixth hour bore our sins in your own body on the tree so that we, being dead to sin, might live unto righteousness: Have mercy upon us now and at the hour of our death, and grant to us, your servants, with all others who devoutly remember your blessed Passion, a holy and peaceful life in this world and, through your grace, eternal glory in the life to come; where, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, God forever.    Amen

Our Father, who art in heaven,

                                hallowed be thy name,

                                thy kingdom come,

                                thy will be done,

                                                on earth as it is in heaven.

                Give us this day our daily bread;

                and forgive us our trespasses,

                                as we forgive those who trespass against us;

                and lead us not into temptation,

                                but deliver us from evil.

                For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

                                forever and ever. Amen

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
